*~*~*~*
The next morning afforded no private moments for Darcy and Elizabeth. The party was gathered in the front hall to leave for their picnic when the butler arrived and spoke to Darcy. He turned to the group.
âIf you will forgive me just a few moments, I have received correspondence which needs my attention. If you will recall, I arrived early at Pemberley for important business.â He turned to Elizabeth, âMiss Bennet, you have received two letters from Longbourn. Do you care to read them since we must delay our excursion?â
âOh, yes. Thank you.â She looked at her aunt and uncle, who nodded in approval at her silent question and then followed Darcy to the library. She smiled in consideration of how angry Miss Bingley must be at her exclusion from joining Darcy.
Once in the library, with the door open, Darcy spoke softly to Elizabeth. âI wish I could take advantage of our privacy. However, I do need to take care of this letter. As we have already aroused suspicions and the anger of Miss Elton, who we know is friends with Miss Bingley, it would be best to give all appearance of decorum.â
Elizabeth feigned a pout. âI recall a night at Netherfield when I told you to return to your letter, although I had much rather continued our argument.â
âDid you, really? In the months after leaving Netherfield, I thought those debates were signs of your interest in me. After leaving Rosings, however, I reconsidered every conversation we had and realized your dislike was obvious.â
âYou always interested me, and my mind was regularly on you. I fervently desired your good opinion, although I was unwilling to admit it to myself. The love we now share was always under the surface, waiting to be nurtured in some way.â
After such a declaration, Darcy took Elizabethâs hand and kissed it. âNow, I regret the need for propriety even more.â
Elizabeth laughed and pushed him toward his desk. She sat on a nearby sofa. Smiling to herself at the cozy scene, she opened the first letter. She wondered at the reason for Janeâs handwriting to suffer so much the letter was misdirected. It did not take long for her to read the dreadful cause. Her youngest sister, Lydia, had eloped and thrown off all her friends for Mr. Wickham!
Jane had little more information to give in the first letter, and Elizabeth tore open the second one. Her pounding heart kept in tune with her eyes as they speedily and greedily read the words which confirmed her worst fears. There were no signs of the couple heading to Scotland; Wickhamâs intention to marry Lydia slipped more and more with each passing line. Jane recorded the condemnation of Wickhamâs old friend Denny and the regimentâs colonel as well. Finally, Jane requested Elizabeth and the Gardiners return to Longbourn.
âAt once!â she exclaimed and jumped from her seat, rousing Darcyâs notice.
âElizabeth! What is wrong?â He came swiftly to her side. âIs it bad news from Longbourn?â
