Remi

Axle lifted his head, and his ears perked up. When he started barking, I peeked around the vintage Indian I was restoring to see what had him riled up. He hopped up from his spot in the garage and took off.

“What the hell?”

He was normally a good dog and not much got him excited. I set down the carburetor and picked up the rag from the floor before following after him. I rounded the corner of the detached garage to find my baby of a pit bull on his back getting belly rubs from Irene. So much for my quiet Sunday afternoon. Even if she’d been on my mind since yesterday. I’d been worried about her and that man. But here she was, seemingly unharmed, and looking as good as always.

My normal greeting sat on the tip of my tongue, but I held it back. Not the only one going through shit. “Good afternoon, Irene.”

She stood and a small smile pulled her lips to the side. “Good afternoon, Remi.” She nearly sang the words, and I suppressed an eye roll. “Sorry to drop by unannounced, but I don’t have your number.”

“Actually, you do.”

Her perfectly groomed brows pulled together. “Oh, when you called me. I should save that.” She beamed a full grin, and I kicked myself for saying anything. “But later. For today I brought you a thank-you gift. A genuine, I did it all on my own, olive branch.” She held up the white grocery bag.

I took the offered package. Inside was two cartons of Rocky Road ice cream and a bag of mini marshmallows. “What’s this for exactly?”

She shifted her weight. “When I was here last time, I noticed you were eating that. I would have gotten you wine or beer, but I don’t know which you like.”

“Neither. I don’t drink.”

She chewed the corner of her lip. “Huh. Well, good thing I went with the ice cream instead.”

I walked past her toward my back door. “Yeah. But again why?” She followed me but stopped at the threshold. “You can come in, but I appreciate you waiting.”

“Last time you didn’t seem too keen on letting me inside.” Irene jumped when Hemi meowed at her feet. “You have a cat, too?”

“I do. Meet Hemi. Though some days she has an identity crisis and believes she’s a dog more than a cat,” I answered while sticking the ice cream in the freezer then leaned against the counter.

Irene pulled a chair out, hung her purse on the back of it, and sat at my small kitchen table. Hemi weaved between her ankles, continuing to meow loudly.

“Is she okay?”

“Yeah, just a drama queen. She thinks everyone is supposed to grace her with undivided attention, but only when she wants it.”

Irene tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “So, there’s hope.”

“For what?”

“Me. Your cat is a drama queen. You think I’m a drama queen. But you like her, so…hope.”

I shook my head and huffed a laugh. “You aren’t going to drop the whole being friends thing, are you?”

She shrugged.
