Chapter 6: Mecca during the Fitnas

In 656, Uthman’s death finally made Ali the leader of the Caliphate, and respect for Ali and for his caliphate is the last point of historical commonality between the Sunnis and the Shi’a before their trajectories took them in different directions. Changes had swept the Ummah (community of Muslims); the Prophet had died 34 years ago, and the community of his Companions - the Sahabah - were vanishing and losing their control over social and religious life. Thus, Ali took over an empire in the throes of revolt but managed to hold onto power for the next five years.
