She would probably never admit it to anyone except possibly Dusty, but having his arms around her right now felt pretty darned good.

No one was going to be stupid enough to try to hurt her with Hunter there. Crazy thought—someone could try something with him there, easily enough—but she wasn’t alone right now.

Maybe she wasn’t letting on how much she was hurting, either.

She’d seen the fear in his eyes when he’d found her. The memories.

Google was a powerful thing. Nikki had always known what she was doing when it came to researching on the net. It was a quiet little skill of hers very few knew about.

Now she wished she hadn’t.

She knew what had happened to him. Where the Louis in his name originated. She’d even seen photos of the only surviving victim of a mass murder in the worst neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky.

She’d hurt for him for hours, imagining the pain he would have felt. She lifted one hand to his cheek. “I’m ok, Hunter. I will be. I promise.”

“I never should have left you alone.”

“Now you’re just being a dork. I have slept in this building alone for nearly every night since I turned eighteen and told my trio of boneheads I was moving out of the ranch before they suffocated me. This…I’ve had a burglar before. He was downstairs, and I surprised him one night. He knocked me down. Gil and Fletcher found him themselves two nights later. No one has bothered me here, since. It was just random.”

“Unless it was someone looking for HLC memorabilia. It happens all the time to me in L.A.”

There was such bitterness in his tone her heart broke for how alone he sounded. Nikki leaned up and pressed her lips to his. Just to comfort mostly.

She sensed he needed it far more than she did right now.

The man just seemed so horribly alone.

He jerked against her. Surprise! Not that she thought she was the first woman to kiss him. Far from it.

He was the sexiest man in America, after all.

He kissed her back.

Nikki stayed there until the ambulance arrived, and her cousin Josh, the paramedic, called her name.

The kiss ended, but Hunter never let her go.
