Chapter Fourteen

"You got Mav to agree to come?" asked Marita while perched on my office desk the next morning. "Get the hell out."

"It came with the cost of accompanying her to Seattle on Saturday. I haven't been in so long…since Jordan did my hair last summer."

"Always a cut, never a color." Marita grinned at me and swatted my ponytail. "How are you not gray?"

"I've had very little stress in my life save for very small intervals?" I smirked and she waved me off.

"Liar. You and Mira both have like no gray. She doesn't dye hers either."

"Hers is all genetic. All the women in her family have black hair, then suddenly it gets super white when they're in their sixties. It's pretty amazing. Her mother dyes hers though now," I said, leaning back in my chair and folding my hands over my stomach.

"Your cheeks are flushed. You feel okay?" Marita asked, her pushy demeanor long forgotten now that I didn't fight her as much.

"I do. It's been a long day. Holly miscarried today so I had to do a procedure with her at the hospital that I don't like doing. Earlier this week we found out about happy news and ended the week with sad. On top of that, this biopsy report isn't good either." I motioned to the chart on my desk. "And I had to tell Janice that she needs to see an oncologist next week. So, batting two for three today."

"Ah. The sad news days are the hardest days." Marita nodded and leaned her elbows on her knees. "Purple scrubs make me happier on those days."

I smiled at her silly notion then gave her shoulder a squeeze. "This little infuser shooting lavender oil into the air makes me happier. Is Imani still here?"

She nodded. "Finishing up some med orders. I heard the loudmouth Miller here before. Was she torturing you?"

"No." I laughed and shook my head. "Just picking up Nora she said, but she did, indeed, disrupt the entire place by making everyone laugh. The energy on that one is enviable."

"Energy as in her will to survive is uncanny, yeah?" Marita leaned her chin on her hand while watching me.

"Yes." I nodded, puffing up my cheeks before letting out my breath. "I still remember her surgeries and almost every visit afterward. She was part of the reason I've built what I have here. So many women and girls…so much pain."

"Honestly, she's a part of why we all do what we do on some level."

"I'm honored to be able to help her, and so many others. They trust me and I really value that," I said, rocking my chair side to side as the momentum of the day slowly faded. "It makes this job worth it."

"They're honored to be your patients, Laur. You're truly an amazing doctor. There aren't many, or any, like you. Anita is an excellent psychiatrist, though she still has a very clinical base with almost all of her patients. For you, you're always you, and that's a gift.
