Belle Aurore

When Lotte is ending her Singespiel

in her room at The Belle Aurore hotel, summer of 1942,

the Côte D’Azur is rapidly

turning Nazi.

She packs her opus in a box, hands it to Dr. Moridis,

and boards a train with her husband and unborn child.

The final boards in Lotte’s story

run together

in which she tells how Death and the Maiden –

the name she gave to an earlier work –

pairs Alfred Wolfsohn, the love of her life,

as Death – with herself as Maiden.

Voicing his ideas she writes: she need not take her life.

She’d vanished into the depths instead

and saved herself

in paint.
