Twenty-Three

Ellie

Hot air wrapped around my limbs and yanked me forward. I cursed and flung my arms to try and catch myself, but the ground disappeared under me and I went flying head-first. My face slammed into something solid and my breath left me in a rush. I felt my brain rattle around in my skull. I spit dirt out of my mouth.

“Ow,” I groaned and coughed. “Mistakes were made.”

How I managed to go from standing to laying face-first in the dirt was beyond me. Every muscle screamed in protest. I pushed up onto my hands and knees, then rolled my neck. My mouth was dry and still had the leftover taste of dirt. I sighed and leaned back on my heels – and my eyes widened.

There was so much green.

And not just the same shade of green. It was various hues. From dark, almost black greens to pale white greens. Trees of every kind filled the jungle around me. I glanced over my shoulder, then jumped to my feet and spun in a circle. I spotted palm tress, oak trees, cypress trees – everything. The dirt under my feet was as black as my own hair. The sky above was a bright blue without a cloud in sight. A massive, round, golden sphere hung high in the sky, but I didn’t try to look up at it.

I blinked and rubbed my eyes, then took another look. I seemed to be in the middle of some kind of jungle. There were all kinds of flowers I’d never seen before, with combinations of colors and shapes I’d never seen.

And everything was moving.

The wind blew and the trees moved like they were alive. I cursed and jumped back. Giant rose-like red flowers shot up out of the ground from right between my feet. Something moved in my peripheral vision so I spun toward it with my hands raised, but my feet tangled in the long skirt of my dress and I stumbled sideways. My balance faltered and my shoulder slammed into a tree covered in moss. I cursed and rested my back against the bark.

Okay. Screw the skirt. I held my hands out and purple smoke billowed from my palms. My magic coiled around my body. What to wear, what to wear…and for some godforsaken reason, my mind pictured the pretty red-haired girl from the new Jumanji movies. No, no, no, that’s a terrible jungle outfit, picture something else – and my I love you, 3000 shirt flashed in my mind.

Warm air swept over my legs and I felt it. I looked down and sighed. I’d put myself in teeny tiny little khaki shorts with brown ankle boots that didn’t go much past my ankles. Fortunately, my mind made the switch and my nerdy shirt was back on instead of the crop top the girl wore in Jumanji.

Okay. Right. I can do this. Just find Stellan first. Then ingredient. I took a few steps but a huge tree popped up out of the ground right in front of me.
