CHAPTER 16

Roux

The detective isn’t the one who comes into the interrogation room. It’s someone I fear more than the devil.

I stumble out of my seat as she walks toward me; I barely have time to say her name until her hand is around my throat, and my head smacks the double mirror so hard I see sparks.

“Soraya.” Savior’s sister and the rest of her crew follow in behind her.

“Do you remember the talk we had on your wedding day?” Her voice is calm, and the only violent thing about the situation is her actions.

“Y—yes.” I barely cough out. But she doesn’t allow another word, not wanting to hear my voice. Instead, she tightens her grip around my throat, and I wait for my life to end at her hands.

“It seems you have forgotten. Let me remind you, it’s okay; I don’t mind.” Her voice is chipper; I think she likes delivering pain. “I said you would die for this family. I may have forgotten to mention I will kill you if you try to harm my brother in any way. I will kill your whole family if you take the one good thing I have protected my whole life to save.” She stalks away like a caged tiger.

“It’s okay, you forgot, some women can’t be beautiful and smart simultaneously. We won’t hold it against you.” It comes from the one wearing green; I think they call her Lime.

Pip and the pink lady chuckle along with the sentiment.

I clutch at my throat, trying to ease the bruising pressure.

“I picked you, Roux. I sought your family out and picked you to marry my brother. Do you want to know why?” She waits for me to open my mouth but holds up a hand, so I shut up. “Because I knew you could survive. I know you have put yourself through hell, guilt, and shame; you’re broken but won’t be beaten. So I knew you would be a good match for my brother.” Soraya doesn’t retract her words, even as her friend Pip grunts in frustration.

“I’m sorry I let you down.” I swallow the spit in my mouth, hoping the next thing I swallow will be a shot of something thicker.

“Oh, you didn’t let me down, sis. I don’t want you to feel like you did. Because what you did was much worse. We have a saying about betrayal in my crew.” Soraya moves to stand amongst her peers.

“It’s better to be buried than betray.” All three of the motor chick crew mimic the words in a way I won’t ever know that type of bond. The kind of loyalty not even from my own blood. “And tell me, what category do you fall under?”

Betrayal.

But I don’t speak the word; I assume I owe payment for the prank. This one going too far.

“Your silence lets me know you understand. We have three strikes, and then—.”

“I’m out.” I understand that much about baseball.

“You catch on quick, princess.” She walks toward me, takes out her switchblade, and I fully recognize her power.
