Chapter Ten

Willow nuzzled Big Blue Sky, taking comfort in her silky warmth, strength and love. Montana Wind stomped a hoof as if annoyed at being neglected and Willow could relate.

She’d spent the last nearly forty-five minutes with Jake and the film crew stalking about the property, framing shots, discussing possibilities, answering personal and emotional questions posed by a man she’d just met while Lucy stood ‘out of the frame,’ prompting her like she knew anything about her life.

While Willow had entertained the film crew, Huck and her aunt had strung lights, silk flowers and vines and ornaments through the rusted trellis that was now nailed into the ground. Jake had adjusted her clothing and fussed with her hair like he was some personal assistant. It had been annoying to feel so useless, and her slow burn of irritation at Jake’s behavior threatened to boil over. Jake hadn’t helped at all with their wedding, whereas Huck’s T-shirt was sweat-painted on his body.

Was it wrong that she was not only relieved that the film crew had left to visit other ranches but even happier that Jake had offered to help them? He’d driven off with only a cheery wave out the window with Lucy riding shotgun? Willow needed to calm down and think. Lucy, had one-arm hugged her and whispered, ‘wedding nerves,’ though Willow didn’t see a ring on her finger.

“Not one on mine either.” She looked at her bare hands, dirt under her fingernails.

There was still work to do, but for a moment she just closed her eyes and breathed in the familiar, comforting scent of horse, sawdust, barn and leather. She really needed to ride. Montana Wind needed to run. And Huck’s Midnight too had been stinted on exercise. It had been three days of working to get the garden, porch and deck fixed up, and while Willow was grateful for Colt’s crew, she was worried about the bill.

She heard the glide of the barn door opening.

“Thought I’d find you in here,” Huck said.

“Almost always,” she admitted.

Effortlessly his presence comforted her. He didn’t make her feel wanting or embarrassed that her fiancé had ditched the family dinner meant to celebrate their wedding. But was it worse that she was happy Jake had left? She didn’t feel like she had the emotional energy to argue.

Didn’t that make her a coward? Should the idea of marriage fill her with such conflict?

“You okay?”

No.

“Thank you for helping me set out the tables and chairs for tomorrow.”

“Thank you. Watching Jim and Ben argue over table seating arrangements was eye-opening and hellish.”

She stroked Montana Wind and tried to dredge up a smile.

“Decaf coffee and some kind of homemade wine is on the table, and I believe your mom is giving Jim a reading before they set up for a round of gin rummy. That’s before she told him he had pink and green streaking through his gray aura—the gray means he’s skeptical and the pink and green mean that he’s loving.”

“And he didn’t speed off in his truck?”

Huck laughed.
