* * *

A waitress arrived with a tray with their drinks. She set a small teapot and cup and saucer down by Rosalind, together with a small milk jug, then the whiskeys in front of the gentlemen.

“Tea? Oddest way to celebrate a wedding I’ve ever seen,” Gabe’s grandfather grumbled.

“You forget,” Ros answered. “I’m carrying the next Carrington heir. It’s my responsibility to ensure they get the best care and opportunity to develop that they possibly can.”

“Humph.” The old man looked at her and to her surprise gave her a wide grin. “You’ll do.”

“I beg your pardon,” she said.

“What? You hard of hearing, girl? I said, you’ll do. Welcome to the family.”

Not even realizing how tense she’d been through the exchange with Gabe’s grandfather, she felt herself relax.

“Well, I guess you’ll do, too,” she replied tartly and poured her tea.

The old man laughed out loud and winked at her.

“I was just testing you. Sorry if I came across as unkind.”

“No, just rude.”

He roared laughing again and beside her she now felt Gabe relax, too.

“Right, now we have that out of the way, can we visit together like civilized human beings?” Gabe said dryly.

Talk quickly turned to ranching and without anything to offer to the conversation, Ros merely watched the interplay between the three generations of men. She drifted off mentally, until she heard Gabe suggesting that as Ros tired easily they would be heading back home. Ros didn’t know whether to be grateful or annoyed that he’d made the decision without even asking her but she had to admit that she was tired and that the head-to-head with Gabe’s granddad had taken more out of her than she’d expected.

They got in the car and headed toward the ranch but as the tires ate up the miles Ros couldn’t help feeling that things were more off-kilter than they’d been before. She’d thought that maybe meeting with Gabe’s dad and grandfather might bring them a little closer, make their marriage feel more real somehow even given their circumstances around getting hitched. Instead, it was as if the distance between them now stretched in an echoing chasm and she was at a complete loss as to what to do to resolve it.

She wanted this to work. She’d agreed to Gabe’s terms but she wanted so much more. Was she destined to failure? It certainly felt like it. A real marriage involving intimacy, closeness, friendship and passion. They’d had intimacy and passion until Gabe had removed himself from that equation and now Gabe’s behavior toward her was like that of a work colleague. She needed...more than that. For both herself and for their child.

But was Gabe capable of it? Having met his father and grandfather and seeing the examples he’d been led by, she seriously doubted it.
