CHAPTER 18
________________
Maric signaled to Davies and Novak to move left and right, and when his men were in position he stepped into the clearing. The target scrambled wildly to his feet, until he heard the metallic click of bullets entering chambers on either side of him. He hesitated for a moment, and then slowly raised his hands.
Davies pulled the manâs arms down behind him, and bound his wrists together with plastic ties. After that he sat him down against a tree, but the target pulled his knees up, and leaned forward to cover himself. Maric understood. Being naked in front of strangers was an embarrassment for a Westerner, but it was mortifying to men from Muslim countries.
He walked over to pick up the manâs uniform, so he could give it to him, and the woman rolled onto her back. Her brown limbs and tuft of pubic hair seemed out of place on the forest floor. She closed her eyes, and he could see her lips tremble. She thought she was going to be used by all of them, and the best thing she could do was not resist.
Maric signaled to Mosha, who pulled her up by one arm and sat her next to the man. Then Maric found more clothes to one side, and dropped them in her lap. She looked up, not understanding, and he gestured for her to put her clothes back on. She hurried to comply.
The two captives were silenced with adhesive tape and bound to each other, and to the tree. Novak found a cell phone, and a knife and a handgun, and took them with him until he was far enough away from the clearing to throw them into the undergrowth.
The tall man was pleased with the way his team had handled the situation. They were trained for everything from suicides to babies that had been brutally killed, and they had focused on the mission exactly as they had been trained to do. They knew that any distraction was a sure way to die, and they also knew that they would never, ever, let the other members of the team down by losing focus.
Davies resumed on point, and found a trail that looked like it led from the sentry post back to the compound. It wasnât long before the team was making good time. When the forest started to thin out, and there was the ghostly reflection of moonlight off manicured lawns, Maric called a halt. There were lights up ahead, and the steady beat of a generator.
Mosha slipped away into the darkness, and was gone for almost ten minutes. When he came back he signaled that the helicopter pad was where they thought, and it was complete with a helicopter. Maric studied the compound for a while, checking the buildings against the images he had memorized. Then he sent his men to their prearranged places.
He clicked his tongue twice, a tiny sound that carried on the helmet mikes, and Mosha detonated the charge he had placed on the helicopter.
