“How can you sorta have a stalker?” he asks.

Stop looking at his penis. Stop looking at the sad, barely there paper covering his penis.

“Well, I guess technically he was just a stalker, but I still think he was mostly harmless.”

A low rumbly noise comes from Marcus’s throat.

“Did you just growl at me?”

“Did he ever touch you?” he asks, ignoring my question.

“I went out with him one time because he seemed like a nice guy, and we worked at the same place. But one date was all I needed to know I was not interested. He kept talking about how delicious I smelled, and I don’t know,” I shrug. “It just weirded me out.”

He leans closer and runs his nose up the side of my neck, then makes that rumbly noise again. My panties are immediately soaked and my nipples pebble.

“You do smell delicious.”

I shiver. “Uh, thanks.”

“Did that weird you out.”

“That’s not exactly what I would call it,” I say. Then I turn away from him. “Let’s see if we can find something other than those pitiful paper towels for you to cover yourself with. I’m sure you’re uncomfortable.”

I dig around in the cabinets and drawers, looking for something—anything at this point—to make me stop thinking about this man’s erection. I mean obviously I’m attracted to him. That much was clear when I first saw him at Jax’s. But seeing all of him just makes it worse. Finally, I find some lab coats in an old storage closet.

I fashion him a kilt, of sorts, using two of the coats. It’s not a perfect solution, but it has covered up his penis. Should the adrenaline still be affecting him to that extent? Clearly, he’s in a lot of pain from the gunshot.

I am a terrible person. I still can’t believe I shot him. But also, I could have sworn it was a bear coming at me. Did my eyes just play tricks on me because of how dark it was?

“Are you enjoying your work here?” he asks.

“Yes! It’s really interesting.” I pause, wondering how much detail I can give him. I keep meaning to go to Selene’s office to ask her about the oddities I’ve noticed. I just haven’t had time.

“Do you know what all the labs work on?” I ask.

“Not really. My focus is on security. Why?”

“Just being nosy, I suppose. But it’s just things I’ve noticed under the microscope.”

“Which is?” he asks.

“I’m assuming since you’re on security, you’ve been vetted and had to sign the same NDA that I did?”

“Obviously.”

“I’m working primarily with strands of DNA, but they’re not normal. It’s basic human DNA but somehow merged with animal. Wolves, if I’m not mistaken, but that’s the only animal I’ve identified so far.”

“What are your thoughts on that?” he asks.

“It’s fascinating. Medical research has utilized animal cells before, like shark cartilage. But I believe what we’re doing here has to do with helping to speed up recovery time. Like soldiers on the battlefield, being able to help them heal from an injury two times faster than normal.
