“Someone shot Buttercup?” Harley repeated.

Nash found himself slightly amused at the complete indignation of Harley’s tone.

“Our Buttercup? Our loveseat?” That was Radko.

JD was gone, headed back to Collier’s Creek. Burl’s signature beef stew, which had been simmering on the stove most of the day, was now served up in bowls, and they were all sitting around the dining room table eating a late dinner.

Robin filled Kellen, Harley, and Radko in on what had happened. To say they were stunned was an understatement.

“Why?” asked Kellen again. “Why would anyone do that?”

That was the million-dollar question, wasn’t it? Why had someone shot at Max and Nash?

“You haven’t pissed anyone off lately, have you, Nash?” Burl asked.

“Why does everyone think it would be me? Maybe it was Radko?”

Everyone turned to look at the young ranch hand. Radko’s eyes widened and his mouth dropped open.

“Nah,” Harley said. “Wasn’t him. Who could hate this face?” Harley grabbed Radko’s cheeks and smooshed them together. “Isn’t he just so cute.”

“Fuck off, asshole,” Radko said, swatting at Harley’s hand.

“So we’ve established it wasn’t Radko—by scientific method, no less. Nash claims he hasn’t pissed anybody off. I’m gonna scratch Useless and Hapless off the list too.” Sitting back in his chair, Burl crossed his arms over his chest and stared at Kellen and Harley.

The brothers frowned, looking at each other and then around the table.

“What? Are you not happy to be off the list?” Nash demanded.

“You have a point,” Kellen admitted. “But if you need me to take a lie detector test or something…”

Everyone but Kellen burst into laughter, even Max, who’d been quiet since they’d gotten back from their hellish ride. Nash swiped at the moisture on his cheek. Trust Kellen to lighten the mood.

“I don’t think we need anyone to take a lie detector test. But thanks for the offer,” Robin said once she was able to speak.

“So,” Harley said, “if it wasn’t any of us, that leaves Burl, Robin, and Max.”

“I have to say,” Burl began, “any enemies of mine are… old, like me. And not at all the sneaky type. If that bastard Harwood wants to finish me off, he’s just gonna drive up in that gas-guzzling Chevy of his. I’ll hear him before I see him.”

Nash restrained himself from pointing out that Burl’s 1999 F-350 needed a gas station all to itself. The Chevy vs. Ford debate would never be settled.

“That leaves Robin or Max,” Radko pointed out.

“Since Robin wasn’t riding with us, I guess that means I was the target,” Max said. “Why? I haven’t even been in town a month.”

“Pshaw,” scoffed Burl, still scowling. “There’s no way you could be a target. As you say, why?”

No one could come up with a reason anyone would shoot at Max or Nash.

“I mean, just because we’ve all considered it, especially when you forget to eat, doesn’t mean we’d go through with it,” Kellen explained.

“And besides, who’d take care of the goats? They’re cute and all, but a handful,” Harley added.

“Fuck off all of you.” Nash showed off his middle finger to the entire table.
