TWENTY-EIGHT

There were too many cars parked in the D&D Recovery lot this late at night. He knew Jimmy always put the repo cars into the barn and locked it up, so no one tried to steal their car back. No use having it in plain sight from the road, either. Too tempting.

TacoLu’s was busy, especially the bar area. He sat down and ordered a rum and Coke as well as three different tacos. Kept to himself, but made sure to smile at anyone looking his way. No sense in being a creep someone might remember down the line.

He’d tip the bartender twenty percent after he was done.

A couple of the waitresses were very pretty, and he made sure to smile at them. Not too much, either. Just enough to be friendly. He had normal male needs as well, so if he got lucky…

He’d never kill anyone working or eating here, either. He liked the place. Loved the tacos. There were a few businesses he’d never involve in his passion.

D&D Recovery was not on his safe list, though. He knew, eventually, he’d need to strike at them directly. No more bodies washing up near the docks.

Especially if what he thought was happening across the street was going down, which was constant surveillance on the water.

He’d need to think about this. Not make any dumb moves. He’d still need to kill, though. It wasn’t like he could keep it in check.

Unless he was called to do work out of Jacksonville Beach, of course, which he knew was happening as soon as his phone vibrated in his pocket.

He answered and frowned when he was told he needed to fly to Chicago in the morning to help out. He’d be gone for a few days. Not sure how many or how bad the problem in Chicago was until he got there.

It was almost enough of a wrench in his plans to lose your appetite, but not when he was at TacoLu’s. He switched to Coke after his drink, knowing he’d need to get up very early and be at the airport. He enjoyed his tacos and walked to his car.

Looked across the street. Too many cars in the lot.

He really wanted to walk or drive over and see what was happening, but it would get them looking in his direction. He was sure they didn’t even have him on their radar right now.

It would be better if they never thought he was the one killing all of these women, either.

The temptation was too much. He walked across the street, staying low, dodging cars as he moved. To the fence and counting to ten before he stood up and looked.

Didn’t see anything unusual, except lights on inside the office.

He counted six cars in the parking lot. Two of them were definitely undercover vehicles. Either local cops or JSO. One of the others could be FBI, although that one was hard to tell.

They’d finally organized enough to watch the water, he thought. After so many bodies.

He knew why they were doing it, though: the last one had inadvertently been someone special.
