âConnected?â said Mahmoud. âI wouldnât have thought so.â
âYour man yesterday said he thought Abu was on to something and thatâs why he was killed.â
âEveryone in Egypt thinks his neighbour is on to something. And then if he gets killed, that gets taken as proof.â
âHe thought Abu might have been wandering around ââ
âLooking for treasure. Yes, I know. Thatâs another great myth. Everybody knows that the Der el Bahari villagers have been robbers for centuries, so it stands to reason that in that time they must have amassed a huge treasure. Of course, no one asks why if thatâs the case the present inhabitants spend their time selling relics for a living.â
âIf everyone thinks so,â said Owen, âAbu may have thought so.â
âAnd wandered round at night on the off-chance heâd find it?â
âWhy else would he be wandering around?â
âTheft.â
âWhat of?â
âEquipment. Cable, that sort of thing. He was leaving in a day or two. Something small that he could smuggle.â
âSo you donât think he was on to something?â
âNo. Nor the other one. Iâm treating them both as accidents. And Iâm trying to find evidence of negligence.â
âAre you finding it?â
âNo,â Mahmoud admitted. He looked up at the great rim of cliff. âItâs like that,â he said. âA wall. A wall of silence. They wonât say anything.â
âYour chap yesterday ââ
âHe had a grudge. He was prepared to talk. But he had nothing to say.â
âThe others?â
âTomasâs men? Wouldnât say a word. A bit frightened, I think. The place, the people. Me. Theyâre only here for a few days and then theyâll be off. Keep your head down. Nothing to do with you.â
âWerenât the two who were killed Tomasâs men?â
âAnother crew. Didnât know them. They say.â
âAnd the villagers?â
âNothing to do with them. Outsiders. Their own fault.â
âCanât you get anywhere on the negligence angle? Arenât they worried it might happen to them?â
âNo.â
âToo well bribed?â
Mahmoud looked at him.
âIf I could only prove thatâ!â
