Chapter 9
Friday
You guys are going to hate me for saying this, I just know if. But honestly, what would you do without me? Did you really think we could wit till opening day to set everything up?
Now we’re ready. Monday will be fantastic. Piece of cake. One thing, though. Mallory, I’m sorry about your friends. Let’ see if we can invite them to the BSC meeting. Seriously.
Just think about it. That’s all.
Don’t worry. Nothing had happened to any friends of mine. Kristy was using the work “friends” loosely. She meant my “friends” at Channel 3.
It was the day after the North Pole Village escapade, and I hadn’t quiet recovered.
The crew had scheduled another visit to our house that evening, and I wasn’t really in the mood for them. So I was happy Kristy had asked all the BSC members to go to Stoneybrook manor after out meeting.
I blew it, though. I stopped home to drop off my book bag. Guess who was puling up to the curb in front of my house?
My “friends.”
“Hi, Mallory!” Mr. Henry called out. “I thought we wouldn’t be seeing you this evening.”
“You’re right,” I replied. “I have to go to Stoneybrook manor.”
“The old age home?” Mr. Henry asked. “Why?”
I explained about the boutique and mentioned my uncle.
“Perfect,” Mr. Henry said. “What a Christmas-spirited thing to do. Not that I should be surprised, coming from a member of the Pike family. We’ll be happy to drive you there.”
“That’s okay, it’s walking distance,” I said, turning up the front walkway.
“Nonsense, it’s no problem at all.”
Mr. Henry followed me into the house. As he chatted with my parents, I ran upstairs and dropped my books on my desk.
“I’m sure you can all use a little rest from us,” I could hear him saying.
“Don’t be silly,” my mom replied.
“Boy, will Mal’s friends be thrilled,” Dad said.
“Thrilled with what?” I asked, running downstairs.
Al my siblings were in the kitchen, looking kind of glum.
“With being videotaped,” Mom answered. “Especially Kristy.”
“You’re going to tape us at the manor?” I asked Mr. Henry.
“Why not?” Mr. Henry said.
“Lucky,” Margo mumbled.
I wasn’t expecting this. I took a deep breath. I excused myself to the bathroom and fixed my hair.
Well, you should have seem Kristy’s face as the can pulled up to Stoneybrook manor. Claudia’s and Stacey’s faces, for that matter, too. They were all gaping.
Kristy walked over to Mr. Henry and introducer herself. As he and the crew unpacked, she explained about the BSC and the Christmas Boutique.
I’m surprised she didn’t ask him to attend a meeting.
As we walked into the Manor, Mrs. Kronauer came briskly out of the rec room.
“Hello,” she said, looking quizzically at Mr. Henry. “May I help you?”
When Mr. Henry told Mrs. Kronauer his plans, she nodded and shrugged. “Well, I suppose it’s all right. We could use a little free publicity. As long as you don’t disturb any of the residents.”
“Not to worry,” Mr. Henry reassured her. “We’re a small crew. You won’t notice us.”
Mrs. Kronauer disappeared into the rec room.
