I should be with Nora. I should be comforting her right now. Instead, I found myself following Butcher across the courtyard and to the ice rink. I had no idea why he was going there, because I knew the varsity team already had their practice before breakfast.

By the time I stepped inside the lobby, he was gone. I glanced around, hoping I might be able to spot him. The thing about Butcher was, he stood out. The guy was tall and broad and always wore a brown jacket. His buzzed hair that was growing out was dark and made him even more recognizable. Yet the lobby was empty, save for one of the seniors behind the concessions counter, wrapping gum around her finger from her mouth.

“Goddammit,” I muttered under my breath.

I pressed my lips together and looked to my right. There was a hallway that led to the restrooms and a drinking fountain made for the sole purpose of players having the ability to fill up their water bottles. A couple of vending machines lit the hallway up, but it still came across as dim, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the candy in there was from the previous year.

Would he go down there?

I wasn’t sure. I gave one more cursory look around me before deciding to head in that direction. I wasn’t doing anything wrong. I just wanted to see if Butcher was here. I just wanted to talk to him. I had no idea what we would talk about, if he would even talk to me in the first place, but I could at least try. I ignored the part where I had no idea why I wanted to try in the first place.

The hallway was still. No tall hockey players crowded the hallway, unfortunately for me.

Huh.

That was disappointing.

Without warning, something coiled around my wrist and yanked me hard into the bathroom.

“Oh, good. You figured out where I was.”

I snapped my eyes up, only to catch sight of Butcher himself, standing there with one hand in his pocket, the other on my wrist, pinning me with one of his long stares. Before I could get my bearings on what was going on, the dull scent of dry urine and cleaning supplies tickled my nose and I had to take a moment to settle my gag reflex. It was only then, when I looked around, that I realized I stood in the men’s restroom.

“What the hell, Butcher?” I asked as I cleared my throat and blinked the water from my eyes. The lights were white, but dim, casting a strange glow on everything in the room. Everything looked faded, from the off-white towels to the orange sink.

“What’s wrong?” There was a genuine look of concern on his face before the corner of his lips twitched. He was amused by my reaction. “Oh, this? Tell me you’ve never seen a men’s bathroom before.”

I rolled my eyes. “What do you want?” I asked, trying to breathe through my mouth. But that only made things worse because the smell somehow made me taste it.
