‘Tilly Redbrow! That doesn’t look like the Norman Conquest to me! Hand it over, please!’

Tilly gave him the magazine. She could feel everyone in the class looking at her. Mr Baxter leafed through it, turned up his nose, then marched back to his desk and placed it in one of the drawers. Two boys in the back row started whispering Tilly’s name and making stupid neighing noises.

‘Ignore them,’ whispered Becky.

After the bell went, Tilly waited at Mr Baxter’s desk and asked for her magazine.

‘I’ll give it back to you, Tilly, but I’m not pleased. How will you pass your exams if you don’t pay attention in class? As a punishment, I want you to write five hundred words on the history of equestrianism. Got that? Five hundred words. Equestrianism. On my desk by tomorrow morning.’

‘Absolutely!’ said Tilly, smiling. That’s not a punishment, she thought.
