I sat in my living room with my hands clasped together, anxiously waiting. I stared at the clock and counted each click, one by one. It reminded me of the throbbing red welts that formed on my back whenever my Father felt I needed a punishment. He would viciously whip me with a leather belt. I only wanted to escape the house for one night. I had been trapped with a cruel, violent monster for so long. All I wanted was to taste freedom for a few hours. Not if he had something to do about it. He was like a shadow. He pounced on me just as I gently turned the knob of the creaky back door.
âWhere the hell do you think youâre going at this hour?â
âIâm justâ¦I donât know.â
âYou donât get to leave here without permission. Iâm going to make sure you never forget that.â Father cruelly whispered.
Thwack. Thwack. Thwack. Thwack.
My mother wasnât able to do anything about it because he always made sure to lock the door. She was forced to hear my bestial screams as my Father violently struck me with complete ruthlessness.
I rarely allowed him to hit Vera like that. I saved her whenever possible. I offered to take her âpunishmentâ myself. She was too young and too fragile. If any young girl could take it, it was me. If I had one thing to thank my Father for, it would be for shaping me into the type of woman who didnât stop for anything or anyone. I endured. I was hellbent on finding the truth and in finishing what I had started. People called me stubborn, but I called it holding myself accountable for the victims and loved ones who deserved justice. The ones who deserved to be remembered and to be delivered the truth, even if they were dead. The people who were alive would know. I would know.
Caroline had been shot in the face multiple times with a shotgun. It was a gruesome murder. The police reported that the shotgunâs barrel was most likely placed in her mouth when the murderer pulled the trigger. It was downright brutal and macabre. The upper half of her head had been completely blown off. Brain matter, pieces of her shattered skull and broken skin had exploded everywhere. I couldnât look at the crime scene photos without vomiting. They shouldâve never been leaked. But I had to look, at least once. I reported on it with teary eyes. I knew Caroline fairly well. She was my brother-in-lawâs wife after all. She was a beautiful, kindhearted woman who deserved to live out her years. Barry didnât deserve her.
I always suspected that Barry had something to do with her murder. He was an unstable person and a police officer at that. A highly dangerous and potentially murderous cocktail mixture. Barry was a rowdy drunk at family parties, and we never liked him. I tried my best, but he was insufferable. He would go on misogynistic rants about how women needed to go back to their motherly roots to stay at home.
