Jack's laughter rang out, a warm melody that mingled with the jovial atmosphere around us. His easygoing nature had quickly endeared me so much to him.
As the game commenced, I watched with amusement as Jack lined up his shot, his concentration unwavering. The ball glided down the lane with precision, knocking down the pins with a satisfying crash. He went again for the remainder of the pins and successfully took them down as well. We all clapped at his victory.
"You're up, Lydie." He grinned.
I stepped up to the lane, ball in hand, saying a silent prayer.
At least let me take one down.
Well, it didâ from the next lane over. As soon as the ball left my fingers with a flick of my wrist, I knew I made a mistake. With too much force behind my release, and no sense of direction, I released the ball into the air and it skipped from our lane to the next, knocking down two pins.
"That's one way to do it," I heard Jack tease, his words accompanied by a playful wink.
âDoes that count?â
âNo.â
âDarn.â
With lightness in the air, we continued the game, and despite my less-than-stellar performance, I was having a blast, and the joy in Jack's eyes mirrored my own.
As the evening wore on, we found ourselves in the final frame. I picked up the ball, determined to end the game on a less embarrassing note than how I started. This time, my aim was true, and the satisfying sound of pins toppling over filled the air.
As I turned to Jack, a gleam of mischief danced in his eyes. "So, who's the bowling champion now?"
âWell, not you.â He laughed. âThatâs the only time tonight you hit the pins in your lane.â
I shot him a mock glare. "Oh, you're in for it now."
Then I pounced, collapsing on the plastic sofa next to him, and commenced tickling him in the side.
Jack's laughter transformed into a delightful mix of laughter and protest as my fingers danced across his ribs. "Hey, hey, mercy!"
âDon't get too confident, mister. I might just have to challenge you to a rematch."
Jack's chuckle was a melody that I could listen to for a lifetime.
As the night drew to a close and the bowling alley lights began to dim, I found myself leaning in closer to Jack, and without hesitation, I pressed a gentle kiss to his lips.
And, like the first time we kissed, the world around us seemed to fade away.
