Hannah looked down at her pasty – there was about half left – and reluctantly stopped eating. They might need to coax Luna to come with them and she wasn’t sure if Matthias had eaten anything either. She darted out of the inn yard and into the square, peering around in the flickering light of the torches.

“Psst, I’m here.”

She swung round and saw Matthias waving at her from the side of a stall. “They’re all in the inn. They had plates of food and they were drinking out of those big jars.” She made a face. “Actually, I think the one with the moustache— ”

“Albert. The other’s one Jacob,” Matthias put in.

“Yes, Albert. Well, him and the older boy who plays the flute, they were drinking a lot. He had a stone bottle he kept passing round and he’d gone all red. When I left, the flute boy was trying to sing and people were telling him to shut up. I think they’ll be there for a bit, anyway. We should do it now. Here, I saved this – it’s a meat pasty. In case you need to tempt Luna to go with you.”

Matthias nodded and took the pasty. “Good idea. Come on then. You stay outside the door and keep watch.”

“What shall I do if they come?” Hannah whispered worriedly. “I can’t just yell or they’ll know someone’s there…”

Matthias nodded, frowning. “I hadn’t thought of that.”

“I could make a horse noise,” Hannah suggested. She tried to whinny but it came out as a bit of squeak and she saw Matthias smirk. “Well, you think of something then!”

“Here.” Matthias pulled a little round piece of wood out of his pocket. “I was working on this while I was waiting for people to buy my toys. It’s a bird caller. You twist this bit, see. It sounds like a robin.” He showed Hannah how to turn the end piece inside the whistle and a high chirruping sound floated out – so real that Hannah almost turned to look for the bird making it. “You try.”

Hannah twisted the wooden toy and smiled to herself as she heard the robin chirp. “All right. Just make sure you’re listening for it.”

Together they crept across the yard, keeping close against the wall and watching for the stable boys. There were several horses in the other stalls now and Hannah wondered what they thought of the bears. Matthias slipped inside and she stood by the door, her heart thumping uncomfortably hard. She could hear a click as Matthias unlatched Luna’s stall followed by a creak as he opened the door.

Then Hannah’s thumping heart seemed to drop down inside her. There was a commotion going on over at the inn, perhaps a fight. She could hear yelling and a heavy thud as if someone had fallen. There were figures spilling out of the door and Hannah saw the landlord in his long apron shoving someone along in front of him.

“Not having you in here stirring up trouble!” he roared.
