CHAPTER FOUR

Mother smiled, taking the eggs from Lulu. She opened the carton, took out several, and cracked them in fine lines across their middles.

Lulu watched the yolks within the egg whites, yellow as suns glowing on snow, slide gracefully into the mixing bowl. “Let me know if you find any dinosaurs or tiny crowns,” she said.

“What are you talking about?” asked Mother.

“Nothing.” Lulu held her chin in her hands, her elbows resting on the kitchen counter.

Mother added sugar to the bowl and said, “I hope your Great-aunty Hauty and Grandpère Hy enjoy my apple kugel.”

“I don’t know that they enjoy anything,” said Lulu.

“Unfortunately, I must agree,” said Harry, who had appeared on the countertop behind the mixing bowl.

Mother said, “That’s an unkind thing to say.”

Lulu watched the yolks and whites being twirled into a tempest. She didn’t say anything.

“Yes, unkind,” Mother said, beating at the eggs. Mother sometimes persisted in her thoughts, beating dead horses, so to speak. “Most unkind. They are, after all, gray-haired people set in their ways.”

“Yes, Mother,” said Lulu. She and Harry rolled their eyes at each other.

“Well! At any rate,” said Mother. Whenever Mother said “Well!” with an exclamation point and “At any rate,” it meant she was changing the subject. “You used to have a monster under your bed, when you were a little girl. Do you remember?” Mother said.

“Yes, I do,” said Lulu.

“Wasn’t that the very same monster that is under Master Sam’s bed?” said Harry.

Lulu nodded.

“You were very young then, Lulu. My goodness, I haven’t thought of that in ages! You were just like Sam! You got rid of him, didn’t you?” said Mother, referring to the monster.

“I thought so,” said Lulu.

“I had hoped so,” added Harry.

“How?” asked Mother.

“I forget,” said Lulu, telling the truth.

“Well, don’t worry. Perhaps it will all come back to you, and you can get rid of Sam’s monster the same way,” said Mother.

“Perhaps,” said Lulu.

“Perhaps,” said Harry.

Neither Lulu nor Harry looked convinced.

“But I still say it’s just a mouse!” said Mother, pouring flour. Some flour made it into the mixing bowl, but a good deal fell to the floor. Mother did a little soft-shoe in it and smiled.

“At least she can still smile,” Lulu said to Harry as they left the kitchen to Mother and her baking. “She doesn’t have a monster under her bed!”
