CHAPTER 18

(MADDIE)

I cannot believe my mom called and asked if she could keep Caydence tonight.

She heard about Lucas coming to town and called to see if I was alright. When I told her I was the one having to interview him today and see him, she said I needed a night to myself.

I told her what he told me as quickly as I could, and she insisted I go this evening.

I told her I wanted to pick Caydence up from school and take her to get ice cream and hear about her first day and then she could pick her up and I could get ready to see Lucas.

My mind is anywhere, but on the press conference when I hear my name.

“I have decided not to give much away today. I am providing an exclusive to Ms. Madison Wilson with Bleachers Report. I will take minimal questions but be prepared to hear no comment for many of my answers.” He is so confident and calm. Normally, people get at least a little flustered with the press, but not Lucas.

I cannot believe he just said that.

These reporters are going to go ballistic on him. And just as the thought crosses my mind, everyone starts speaking at once.

“Mr. Edwards, why the exclusive?”

“Mr. Edwards, I can do a better exclusive than her!”

“Mr. Edwards, please don’t do this, we all deserve a shot.”

“Mr. Edwards, what makes her so special.”

Becky suddenly quiets the room so he can speak.

“I chose Ms. Wilson, because I believe her to be the most talented journalist in this room. I believe she will write the truth and not smear my name in the process, and she has my trust.”

Again, the room goes wild. I feel a hand on my shoulder and Becca is right beside me.

“We should get out of here before this gets any crazier.” She looks kind of panicked and I realize she is probably right.

He does realize this is being televised right? He just handed me the keys to his story and I know without a doubt, I will do right by him, I owe him that much with what I am hiding.

As soon as we cross the street and are in a safe zone, Becca turns on me.

“What the hell did you say to him to get this exclusive? Travis is going to worship the ground you walk on!” she asks eagerly.

I have no idea how to respond, because it is not like I want to tell her what happened in the conference room.

“I have no idea, but I have my work cut out for me.” As soon as I finish my sentence, my phone is ringing, Travis...

“GREAT WORK WILSON! I don’t know what you said in your private interview, but I look forward to reading your notes and first drafts of this article. You just put yourself on the map kid.” He says with excitement.

“Thank you, Travis. I am meeting with him this evening in his personal residence. I would like the rest of the day off to prepare.
