CHAPTER 16

September’s cooling breezes carrying the scent of pine, whispered of autumn’s radiance, cascading down from higher elevations. Liz relished the changing seasons and with King at her side, she stood on her back porch to breathe in the crisp, mountain air and listen to the music of rustling leaves. This time of year, they had a different sound—crisp and clattering, before dancing down to carpet the forest floor in gold.

Releasing King into the fenced area of the yard, Liz stared into the woods beyond. She had a lot on her mind.

Stevie, her bookish lawyer son, had just about taken leave of his senses with his new girlfriend, Tiffany. The two had become well acquainted during Stevie’s visit with his father in Daytona Beach. He had since returned to his job in the Washington, D.C. area, but was flying back and forth to Florida to visit Tiffany. Liz recalled a recent phone conversation.

“We’re talking about marriage,” Stevie told his mother.

“That’s awfully quick. You’ve only known each other a couple of months.

The words slipped out. “Is she, um, pregnant?”

“Oh no, Mom,” the young man said emphatically. “We’ve never, and Tiffany has never, well you know. She’s a born-again Christian and she’s saving herself for her husband. In fact, I’m born-again now too. Tiffany helped me to understand what that means.”

“What does it mean?” Liz asked.

Stevie took a deep breath. “I’m new to this, but I’ll do my best to answer. All my life I wondered why Jesus had to die on the cross. It seemed to have no purpose, as if a bunch of angry people got together and crucified this messenger of peace and love. I now know that Jesus was, and is, more than a messenger of peace and love. He is God incarnate and he died for our sins—my sins.”

“Are you such a sinner and am I?” the mother questioned. “I always thought I was a good person who would go to heaven, if there is a heaven, that is.”

Stevie struggled to put his faith into words. “Um, Tiffany told me that salvation isn’t about being good because we’re all sinners. She said that to be saved and go to heaven, we need to accept Jesus as our personal Savior.”

Liz did not want to diminish her son’s enthusiasm, so before they said goodbye, she told him she would give it some thought.

Now, as she watched the trees wave in the wind, Stevie’s words repeated in her mind. He seemed to echo what Carlos had said about asking God to forgive his sins.

Could they be talking about the same thing?

The ringing of Liz’s phone left that question open-ended.

She answered quickly. “Hi Carlos.”

“Hello Liz,” he replied, downcast.

During a video chat, his tone and expression conveyed discouragement. His builder friend had decided not to purchase the family home.

“He said there have been cost overruns on other projects and there isn’t there isn’t enough capital to go around.”

“Oh well, c’est la vie” (Such is life) he said, as he tried to find something positive.
