Chapter Eight

Sebastian is gone when I wake up.

I’m lying in his spot, curled up on his pillow, with his smell wrapped around me. I lay there for a long time before I noticed the note on his nightstand. I grab the white piece of paper written in red ink and sit up, his sheets falling around my waist.

Tabitha,

I should be home around the same time tonight. Natasha will take care of you. Let her. I’ve never had more fun sleeping in my life. I give up on nothing.

S

I grin at his letter. His handwriting is so rigid yet sure, as if he thought very much about what to write before he did so. I smell it, but it smells only of paper. I set it down and got out of bed. I take a long shower in his bathroom, washing my body with his soap. When I get out, I dry my hair and put it in a bun, and then I dress in the gray shirt he wore last night. It isn’t as hard being without him, with the smell of him clinging to my naked body.

There is breakfast on the bar when I finally make it to the kitchen. Natasha comes out of the living room with a hamper full of clothes and smiles at me. “Coffee?”

“No.” I know she’ll have to make it. I don’t mind Sebastian making me coffee, but I do mind her. She doesn’t work for me. “This is fine.”

She frowns. “Mr. Vincent will not be pleased.”

I roll my eyes when she leaves, and I dig into my breakfast. A Belgian waffle with a side of over easy eggs and turkey sausage. It’s good, and I want coffee, but Sebastian has his claws in Natasha. I’m fine. I can make my own coffee. It requires hardly more effort than a movement of my finger. When Natasha returns, she meets my eyes boldly and turns the coffee machine on. So, there, I pretend she says.

“Should I wash your sheets today?” she inquires.

I shrug. “Why?”

“You’ve only slept in them a couple times. Mr. Vincent’s are in the wash right now.”

What is she getting at? “No, you don’t have to wash them.”

“Mr. Vincent never allows his girlfriends to sleep in bed with him.” She lets her breath out, like she couldn’t hold it in anymore. “It’s new to me, that’s all. He’s so predictable. He does the same thing every day because it comforts him. He has a schedule. He needs to be comforted. Since you’ve shown up, he’s coming out of his shell.”

I choke on my food. I grab a napkin and wipe my mouth off. He was out of his shell, all right. “What do you mean?”

She sighs. “I’ve known Sebastian my entire life. We were never best friends or anything since my mother worked for his family, but I spent a lot of time at their house playing with Ginger and Sebastian when Mom had to work late or when Mrs. Vincent needed her to watch the kids.
