Lara knelt beside me, inspecting my forehead with a mock-serious expression. "You've got a tiny scrape there," she said, her eyes twinkling with laughter.

I stood up, brushing snow off my behind. "My head's too frozen to feel anything. Doesn't matter." I tried to sound nonchalant, but a part of me was secretly glad she was here.

She laughed, a sound that was becoming increasingly familiar and oddly comforting. "We still need to clean it up. Can't have you walking around looking like you fought with a Christmas tree and lost."

"I really don’t want Max or Mom seeing it. They'll make a big fuss over nothing," I grumbled, feeling a bit foolish for the fall.

"It's just a paper cut size, Jake, but sit. I’ll grab something to clean it." Lara's tone left no room for an argument.

As she walked away, I couldn't help but admire her. Lara was a vision, even in the mundane act of fetching a first aid kit. Her bubbly personality was like a beacon in my often too-grey world. It was easy to see why Max adored her.

Returning with the kit, Lara directed me to sit on the stool I'd been using to hang the lights. She worked with an efficient gentleness, cleaning the scrape on my forehead. I found myself watching her, captivated by the focused furrow of her brow and the way her hair cascaded around her face.

"There, all done," she declared, stepping back to admire her handiwork. She'd placed a small bandaid over the scrape, the kind Max would have picked—with cartoon characters on it.

"Thanks," I said, a little gruffly. I was touched by her concern, but wasn’t great at showing it. Lara just smiled, her eyes sparkling with a mix of humor and warmth.

"Just doing my part to keep the town's handyman in one piece." She dramatically motioned her hand away in a playful wave. "Can't have you falling apart before the Christmas lights are up."

I inhaled deeply. She smelled incredible. "No, we can't have that… can we?"

"No," she said, softly. "I should go."

"Uh-huh."

But then she didn’t move, and neither did I.

We just stayed there, locked in a gaze that felt like it stretched on forever. In that moment, everything around us seemed to fade into the background—the twinkling Christmas lights, the gentle hum of SnowFire Falls, even the crisp winter air.
