Chapter 2
âIâM SO glad to meet you, Mario,â Tomâs grandfather said, lifting his glass of sparkling cider in Marioâs direction. âJanice has been telling us how happy you two are.â
Tom blushed. âI am happy,â he said. âIâm very lucky.â Marioâs eyes were warm as they held Tomâs, and Tom quivered when he felt Marioâs foot stroking his calf.
âThat went well,â Mario murmured, reaching out and threading his fingers through Tomâs as they drove toward home a short while later. âIt was a great way to spend our first Thanksgiving together. I like your family.â
Tom squeezed his fingers, then ventured, âJanice is going up to her in-lawsâ, but we could spend Christmas with your family if you wanted.â
Mario shook his head. âTom, I donât need you to meet my family. Iâve told you before, itâs not fucking worth it. Theyâre lushes and have been ever since I can remember, even when I was little.â
Tom looked down at their joined hands, feeling a little wistful. His own parents had died in a car accident, killed by a drunk driver on New Yearâs Eve, when Tom was a baby. He and Janice were taken in by their elderly great-aunt, and it had been a good, loving, and secure childhood, but even so, he still felt that little nagging hole in his life every now and then from growing up without a mom and dad.
âWhat is it, Tom?â Mario asked, and Tom realized he had tensed, his fingers tightening on Marioâs.
He shrugged. âWell, itâs just that your parents areâwell, theyâre alive, Mario. They have to be so proud of you, owning your own business, your own home, all youâve accomplishedââ
Mario rubbed his thumb over the back of Tomâs hand. âYou donât get it, Tommy,â he said quietly. âMy parents arenât capable of being proud. Theyâre so pickled in alcohol, I doubt they remember I exist half the time.â
âWere they abusive?â
Mario shook his head. âNo. Well, not physically. They were just neglectful, not caring about much of anything except the next bottle of booze. My mom cleaned houses to keep them in whiskey.â
âAnd your dad?â
âCashed checks,â Mario said, his voice terse. âDisability, workersâ comp. Injured his neck a long time ago. I donât want much to do with them, Tom.â
âEven if itâs only once a year, for only a little while? Iâitâs your parents, and itâs Christmas. Thatâs all.â
Mario didnât answer, and they rode home the rest of the way in silence, both lost in thought.
