The stolen shirt

Junaid Baghdadi was busy performing his Prayer one night when a thief crept into his house. Although he realised that someone had entered uninvited, nevertheless, he continued praying. The thief was looking for valuables, but all he found was Junaid’s new shirt. ‘I guess that will have to do,’ he said to himself as he picked it up and sneaked out of the house. Now Junaid had heard all the rummaging around but had paid no attention to it, being deep in his prayers.

Now good old Junaid really believed the robber needed that shirt, and that the only way he could get one was to steal it. So he kept the theft a secret.

While strolling through the bazaar a few days later Junaid came across two men quarrelling. ‘What’s all the fuss about?’ asked Junaid who was always anxious to settle a dispute.

‘Well,’ explained the customer, ‘I want to buy this shirt from him but I want to be sure he didn’t steal it from somebody, so I want him to produce a witness proving that it really is his shirt — and he won’t do it’

Junaid immediately recognised the shirt as being the very one that was stolen. ‘What a coincidence’ he thought to himself, but decided to keep quiet about it. Instead he offered to be a witness himself. Not only that, he even offered to buy the shirt. The customer, impressed by Junaid’s enthusiasm immediately bought the shirt.

It wasn’t long before the thief heard the whole story. He remembered that old Junaid had nothing in his house of any value but the shirt He thought about Junaid not telling about the theft, and then acting as witness that it hadn’t been stolen. His heart sank and he felt terrible about what he had done. He ran to Junaid’s house and confessed his crime amidst tears and apologies. He decided right there and then to become a good Muslim and never to steal again. And he kept his promise, according to what people say.
