NADIA

Sunlight danced behind my closed eyes. It warmed my face, playing hide-and-seek with the air-conditioning. I burrowed under the blanket even as I stretched out my hand to reach for the large, warm body I’d snuggled up against most of the night. There was only emptiness.

A jolt of adrenaline through my body bolted me upright, and my heart flipped around in my chest before settling into a too-quick rhythm.

“Easy,” Jake murmured from the chair near my bedroom windows.

Pulling the blanket up to my naked chest, I swiveled around to face him. He was sitting in the wingback, shirtless, his pants on but unbuckled. His hair stuck up in places, and there was a morning shadow along his jaw. It was the most unkempt I’d ever seen him, and by far the sexiest version of Jake there was.

He pushed himself out of the chair and prowled across the space toward me, his bare feet soundless on the carpeted floor. Bracing both hands against the mattress, he crawled across the bed to me until his face was within inches of mine.

“Good morning, beautiful.”

Warmth heated my cheeks, and I rubbed my face against the top of the blanket hoping to deflect from the unexpected but totally satisfying feelings coursing through my body. Then his lips were on mine and my embarrassment warred with my desire for him. Soon, I was returning his kiss as anxiously as he was kissing me.

He pushed his body against mine, and we both fell back onto the bed. He was on top of the covers, and they separated us, but I didn’t let that stop me from wrapping my hands around his neck and letting the minutes pass by as we remained lost in each other’s kiss.

Unexpectedly, Jake pulled away from me. “I have to go.”

What? Why? No. I didn’t want him to leave.

He brushed his lips over my forehead, smattering kisses there. “Don’t frown. I have a lunch meeting. I’ll call you later.”

Here we go. The dreaded morning after. Last night had been amazing, but now it was over, and he was trying his best to get away from me. Worse, I was doing a clingy girlfriend impersonation and I needed to end it. Now. Pushing the blanket away from my legs made him move away from me. I stumbled out of the bed just as he climbed off in the opposite direction.

Aware that I was as naked as the day I’d been born, and that Jake was devouring every inch of me with his eyes, I turned around and walked to my dresser, from which I pulled out a tank top and silky pajama shorts that came to midthigh and didn’t do near enough to hide my body from him. Though the way he was watching me let me know that there would be no hiding from him. He saw everything. And he was smart enough to figure out any hidden pieces on his own.

He was already dressed when I turned around. I opened my bedroom door, and he ran his hand through his hair before walking out into the living room.
