Charlie walked into the school room, where John Foxworth was trying to drill the boys in irregular Latin verbs. Based on what Charlie heard, the boys were both more interested in what was going on in the back fields than what John was trying to teach them. It was just as well, as Charlie was about to break up the lesson.

"Excuse me, Mr. John. May I have a word in private with Andy? Could you and Buddy perhaps step outside? It is a lovely day. Perhaps some natural history would be more appealing than Latin lessons this morning?

"Certainly, General. Come along, Buddy."

The two of them exited the room quickly. They knew perfectly well that if Papa showed up during lessons and asked to see one of the boys alone, the boy in question was definitely in trouble.

Charlie settled on the arm of an overstuffed chair by the fireplace. Usually the chairs were used by the children to curl up and read in a comfortable environment, but today, the general indicated to Andy that he should stand in front of the fireplace facing him. The boy knew what this meant—he was to stand straight with his eyes front and not say a word until the general told him to do so.

Andy stood at attention, waiting. He was desperately trying to think of what he had done that was so heinous as to justify a private lecture and whatever else was coming from Papa, who was in full soldier mode.

Charlie did not say a word. In fact, he looked at his nails, then reached into his pocket for his pen knife, which he slowly opened and used to trim a ragged hang nail from the index finger of his right hand.

Then he looked at the nail, folded up the knife, put it back in his pocket and then withdrew a cigar from a small leather case in his pocket. He examined it, gave it a quick sniff and licked a spot where the wrapper leaf was a bit loose. Then he began looking for a light.

Even though he could see a box of Lucifer's on the table next to the ashtray, Andy stood silently as his papa made the gestures of looking in his pockets for an incendiary device.

Andy stood there, watching, waiting, and racking his brain unsuccessfully. He started shifting his weight back and forth from one foot to the other. Still he waited. Finally, he could stand it no longer. "Papa, please? Tell me what I have done wrong!" His voice cracked with suppressed tears.

"Son, tell me." Charlie ripped a match against the wood of the chair. "How did it feel when you were placed in a very uncomfortable position and could not do anything about it?"

Andy shook his head. "Not good, Papa. What have I done?"

"You have done to the maids and staff in our home exactly what I have just done to you. You have done and continue to do something that makes them all VERY uncomfortable, just like I just made you very uncomfortable.
