CHAPTER 23

When Egersheim said he didn’t want us at the press conference, I couldn’t tell if it was to protect or punish us. So Collins and I went down to the cafeteria to watch it.

We got a table by the television, a small Zenith someone had donated to watch the Red Sox and other sporting events. As people walked by, it was obvious that Collins knew more cops than me.

I wasn’t jealous, but it made me think about retirement. I was far from the end of my career; few officers retired in their forties. But I was getting older, something I realized when Collins flew by me in the foot chase at the parade. I knew more than him, and wisdom always trumped youth or fitness, especially in crime-solving. But age was something that no one could ignore.

We sat through the last ten minutes of Hollywood Squares until finally the midday news came on. As expected, the first story was the press conference about the murders.

People gathered around the TV holding trays of food and coffee. On the screen, I saw Chief McNamara walk out in a brown blazer, his tie tight around his thick neck. His thin hair was slicked back, more from sweat than from Brylcreem or pomade. He was a strong leader, but he didn’t like public speaking and wasn’t good at it.

Standing behind the podium, he looked at the men on either side of him. One was a deputy superintendent, and the other was the head of the State Police. He adjusted the mic and began to speak:
