It was two a.m. The ooo-eee-ooo-eee of the cicadas’ song rose to a deafening crescendo. Lance was suddenly wide awake and tried to speak. He coughed twice and then tried again, but his voice was faint.

“My backpack. Will you look for it in the morning? Make sure you bring it, okay, boss?” Lance’s breath was raspy and labored, and Dave strained to hear. “Isabela,” he whispered. “Go see her for me, will you? She is staying at the Thai Guest House in Chiang Mai. I’ll make it back, damn it, however long it takes. Don’t forget to tell her about my dream … just now, I dreamed of a young girl with the face of an angel and wild auburn hair. Tell her that one day we’ll have a beautiful girl. Reach in my pocket, won’t you? Give her the elephant and jaguar …”

Lance’s words faded into a mumbled incoherence that Dave couldn’t make out. He leaned in closer and spoke into Lance’s ear.

“Hang in there, chief. You tell her yourself. Do that for me.”

Amigo favored his front right paw, which no longer supported him. With fierce determination, he hopped on three legs to place his snout on Lance’s belly. The little dog’s head rose and lowered with the erratic rhythm of Lance’s breathing. He snarled when Dave approached and tried to separate him from the injured man.
