“I’M JUSTsaying,” Rick said defensively. “You

have how many pairs of black Italian loafers and only one copy of your family’s grimoire?” “It doesn’t work the way you are making it out to be,” Mike said as he sorted through his closet, deciding what to pack and what to leave behind. Fortunately he had spelled a number of bags to be much larger on the inside than they appeared on the outside, so he could pack a lot without having to add bulk to their travel load.

“Why?” Rick asked from the bed, where he was sprawled out. “You couldn’t spare the like, ten bucks to take it to the office supply store and have them Xerox it for you?”

“If I wanted to buy them a new copy machine,” Mike said seriously. “The Srevic grimoire, like many magical books, has a number of spells and enchantments on it that keep it from being photocopied, photographed, or even read by the wrong person.”

“Huh?” Rick said, sitting up to see Mike, who was sitting on the floor surrounded by socks and underwear.

“Hey!” Mike cried in embarrassment as Rick eyed his collection of cute underwear. Sighing, Rick lay back down and Mike continued. “Like I was saying, if you tried to photocopy a spell or entry or even the front cover, the machine would blow up. I’ve tried.”

“Great,” Rick said with a sigh of frustration. “The whole book is even enchanted so the only ones that can read it are Srevic and those bound to the soul of a Srevic,” Mike said before jumping to his feet as a thought occurred to him. “That’s why they need Wyatt! They want something in the grimoire and they are going to use Wyatt to get it!”

“Will that work?” Rick asked.

“I don’t know if it will work with a demon inside of him,” Mike said quickly. “I had a book that discussed demonic possession at length, but of course they took that too. Damn it! Wait….”

“What?” Rick said when Mike went silent for a few moments.

“Wyatt isn’t fully transitioned,” Mike said, staring at a spot on the floor but not really seeing it as his brain worked through a possible snag in his enemy’s plan.

“Okay?” Rick asked, trying to get Mike to explain the point he was making.

“The book becomes readable one spell at a

time as a Srevic transitions from mortal to witch,” Mike said slowly. “They become readable in order of potency from weakest to most powerful.”

“So,” Rick said leadingly, “what? What’s in there that they would want?” At this question a feeling of incredible horror set into Mike. “The Srevic Rite,” he whispered.

“Mike.” Rick got off the bed and rushed over to Mike, who had gone ghostly white, and took him in his arms. “It’s going to be okay.”

“No, it isn’t,” Mike said, struggling out of Rick’s grasp and pacing away before turning to look him in the eye. “The Srevic Rite is a spell to call on the magic of every Srevic witch the caster can name.
