Mac watched his wife head up the stairs after their day long ride. Visiting the tenants had been her idea. Most were very responsive to see them. Most were aware of Ivan's precarious health and were grateful to see someone taking up the mantle for his estate.

Sorcha's biggest challenge with some of the women had been the fact she was American. The women were wary of this stranger offering services and help. Sorcha soon won them over with her smile and personality. She never met a stranger.

Mac had the feeling as he watched her carefully ascend the stairs that her hours on horseback were more than she was used to. She walked very slowly; her immediate wish had been to change out of her riding habit.

Mac smiled, knowing if he went to their chambers he'd find her in the bath soaking. That would come shortly. First, he wanted to find Ivan and let him know how their day had progressed.

He found the older man sitting outside enjoying the sunny afternoon.

"I hope I'm not interrupting," Mac said as he approached Ivan.

"Not at all. Sit; tell me how your day went."

Mac began to tell Ivan how they'd managed to see each and every tenant. He held back on the list he had in his head, wanting to see how Ivan responded.

"What seems to be the biggest need?" he finally asked.

"The usual. Making sure the tenant cottages are ready for winter."

"That's a given. Can you see that it gets done? Put together a crew to repair each cottage?"

Mac nodded and stretched his legs out in front of him. "Aye, I can get it all done. Sorcha will see to the needs of the families."

"The project she and her sister-in-laws plan to take on?"

"Aye. She'll do just fine. They love her."

"I was going to ask how they took to her."

Mac laughed softly. "I think her being American fascinated a few."

"Of course. I'm sure quite a few have never heard an American. Now they have one as their mistress."

"That and she's a little more open than some of her Scottish counterparts."

"She reminds me of her father. William was brash. Always said what he believed, never held anything back. He'd be proud of her. Of you as well."

"I'm sure he would be quite proud of her. She's an amazing young woman."

Ivan shifted his weight and faced Mac. "I spent the morning with my estate manager, going over everything that happened while I was away. He did well, in spite of Ian's behavior."

"That's a relief, I'm sure. Your estate manager is worth his weight in the money you pay him then."

"He is, and I want you to meet with him. There's no reason I can’t start handing over some of the estate's running to you."

"I'd be honored," he replied. "What do you plan to do with all your sudden found free time?"

"Enjoy each day of my life for as long as I may have."

"And may there be many more," Mac said.

Mac looked around at the roses and other flowers that were planted nearby.
