What About Black Privilege?

“We don’t have a White History Month”

“I f there was a group for white students at my school, that would be racist!”

“What about affirmative action? How is that fair?!”

The “what about us?” sentiment that leads to the idea that people of color are somehow privileged is a knee-jerk reaction to being faced with acknowledging that white privilege is in fact real. To understand that white privilege is real is to understand that people of color are largely oppressed, or disadvantaged by this country’s institutions. Such systemic disadvantages require systemic solutions. As anti-racism educator and writer Tim Wise explained, this myth of Black privilege ignores the fact that the historical balance of power is always skewed in favor of whites, and viewing attempts to balance the scales as reverse discrimination ignores the social and historical context of race in our country. Wise says, “It’s like protesting that sick people are privileged, relative to the healthy, because there are no hospitals for the latter. It’s like complaining that the poor are privileged relative to the well-off because no one sets up soup kitchens to serve the affluent; nor does Habitat for Humanity ever show up to build mansions for the rich.”9
