Morrison looked almost as worried as his wife as he tried to soothe her, saying, "Now, Mother, this Canadian knows the way, so it's all right."
Longarm glanced up at the sky and said, "I can see you were thrown off by the darkening and the wind shift. Why don't I show you something while your lady finishes brewing that pot?"
He stood up and led the bewildered Cockney away from the fire. When one of the kids tried to follow, Morrison said, "Stay with your mother, Willy. This is grown-up talk."
As they drew out of earshot, the greenhorn sighed and said, "All right, mate. I know you think I'm a bloody fool, but how did I get us lost?"
Longarm said, "I generally don't call a gent a fool unless I know more than he does, Mr. Morrison. You could probably show me around your own country pretty good. How long have you been on this side of the water?"
"About a month. We took the train to Winnipeg and bought the covered wagon and supplies. The brochure thay gave us in Liverpool said it was easy to get to the western provinces from there, but I don't know. We've been having a ruddy awful time finding anything but gnat bites, and the kids eat more than we allowed for."
Longarm hunkered down and said, "You're almost there. Let me show you something."
