Check out fried chicken in a Tokyo supermarket

JAPAN // There are so many great food experiences in Tokyo that it might seem strange to talk about fried chicken from a convenience store, but every now and then it’s nice to have a break from mind-blowing sushi and the world’s best ramen, so don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. And it’s a great way to discover the wonders of a konbini; the ubiquitous convenience stores that are like a microcosm of Japanese consumer culture. If you can’t find what you’re looking for in a konbini then odds are you don’t need it. Of all the different konbini in Tokyo, the Lawson’s chain gets top billing for one reason and one reason only, delicious fried chicken. There’s a choice of honetsuki (fried chicken with the bone in), honenashi (boneless fried chicken) and karaage (chicken nuggets), and they’re all good; moist on the inside, crispy on the outside. All that’s left to do now is grab a coffee in a can. Snack break sorted.

EAT IT ! At one of the 14,000 Lawson’s konbinis across Japan.
