Chapter 23

Tessa

“So, what exactly is a Marking Ceremony?” I asked the pack as we ate pepperoni frozen pizza at the dining room table.

“The Marking Ceremony is what makes you a member of a pack,” Logan explained. “You can pretty much consider it an initiation ceremony.” He paused as he took a bite of pizza. “It involves a little bit of magic and some ancient rituals.”

“It’s called a Marking Ceremony because, by the end of the ceremony, you will have the pack’s scent on you,” Jesse explained. “That’s how other packs will know which pack you belong to.”

“So, if I go through with the Marking Ceremony, then I’ll smell like… you guys?” I asked.

Tate nodded. “Yup. Our scent will be all over you.”

“It’s like the way a dog smells its owner’s scent on its blanket,” Ryan explained. “You’ll smell us everywhere you go.”

Truthfully, that didn’t sound like the worst thing. Their pack odor was pretty freaking intoxicating. Even right now, it was overwhelming for me.

Of course, I knew a lot of that had to do with the fact that I was so attracted to all of them. I doubted that I would have felt this way about their scent under ordinary circumstances. It only had this aphrodisiac-like effect on me because I wanted to jump their bones—all their bones.

It made me feel… strange. I had never been so overwhelmingly attracted to more than one guy at a time. And to be attracted to an entire pack of wolves? My pack? Not that I was a part of their pack just yet, but I was meant to belong to their pack.

Maybe it was because I was meant to reproduce with one of them.

“So, when can we do this Marking Ceremony?” I asked.

Logan glanced over at me sharply. His bright blue eyes met mine. “Are you sure you really even want to go through this, Tessa?”

That was a good question. I tried to look at it from his perspective. I had spent the past two years running from them, but now, suddenly, I wanted to join their pack—even though I barely even knew them.

“It’s the only way Bryce will leave me alone, isn’t it?” I questioned.

“Don’t worry about Bryce,” Logan replied. “We will make sure that he doesn’t harm you, even if you decide not to join our pack.”

I hesitated for a moment. “Okay, well, aside from Bryce, I think I have another really good reason to join the Blackwood Pack.”

“Yeah?” Logan’s thick eyebrows shot up.

“Well, I mean, I was born to be a part of this pack, wasn’t I?”

“You are destined to be one of us,” Logan replied with a nod. “But you can always change your destiny.”

“How can I change my destiny?” My eyebrows rose in question.

“Free will. You can always choose not to do something you were destined for.” He paused. “At least, most of us can.”

“Most of us, including me?” I asked.

His blue eyes locked on mine. “You should probably know the truth about your destiny before you choose to run from it.
