It took us seven hours to get to the hospital. And despite the fact that we completely ruined the interior of my car with our creatively stained clothes, I don’t regret a thing.

I’d do whatever it takes to make her happier and take away her pain.

With a small stop to buy some clean clothes and wipe the food traces off our faces with some wet wipes, we haven’t had anything to eat or drink this entire time. The silence between us was louder than I considered possible, with Crystal’s tension palpable as she stared out of the window, but I didn’t want to distress her any further. Besides, all my small talk attempts resulted in her giving me one-word answers, so I chose to keep quiet.

But thankfully, as we arrived at the hospital, it turned out her mother was already awake and stable, with only a minor concussion. Crystal’s relief was evident as she rushed—and disappeared—into her mother’s room.

And now, I wait in the reception, still trying to process what happened today.

Her lips on mine, our silly food fight… and the unexpected shift in her. I can hardly believe I saw Crystal so frightened and shaken by the name she saw on her phone when it rang. It’s as if she’d seen the devil itself crawl from the pits of hell.

Which leaves me thinking: what exactly did her mother do to her?

I expect it will take a few hours for Crystal to leave her mother’s room, and I’ll probably starve by then, but I don’t want to leave in case she comes out while I’m searching for a cafe to buy us some food or coffee. Instead, I pace around the corridor, my head throbbing with worries.

“Hey…” Crystal’s voice cuts through my unease.

I turn on my heels to see her walk toward me. But I frown when I notice Crystal’s smile—as if she’s back to normal as if nothing ever happened.

“I’m sorry I wasted your time and gas and made you worry,” she says with her usual tone, just slightly colder. Her fingers tremble almost imperceptibly when she hooks her fingers in the pockets of her blue jeans that we bought a little earlier to avoid arriving at the hospital looking like half-prepared food. “I caused so much trouble. I’m really sorry.”

“You didn’t do anything.” I pick a small piece of dough from her hair, but a deeper frown tenses my forehead. “Is your mother okay?”

“Yeah, excellent,” she forces a laugh as if it doesn’t bother her and dusts off her white t-shirt. She’s completely shutting everything out as if trying to hide it behind some joke. “It turns out Alice’s married again. Her new husband—and children—will take care of her.” She pulls her phone out of her pocket and fumbles with it, not meeting my eyes. “She... Well, she doesn’t need me here. I’m... I’m so sorry for making the scene.”

My heart breaks for her.

It’s evident that Crystal is hurting, but she’s trying to hide it behind a smile.
