There were noises in the forest that sounded like a million knives being sharpened. ‘Cicadas,’ Alise said. ‘Little insects. So don’t be frightened. ‘Great!’ I said, not bothering to hide my irritation.

We continued walking. I could hear my heart beat fast. Twigs crackled underneath our feet. I heard a whirring of wings and turned in fright. ‘Don’t!’ Alise hissed. ‘Don’t make any sudden movements. You scared me! And I might hurt you in my fear!’

For a moment, I thought of what Rukmini had said—there is no telling when an animal will turn! Would she? I asked myself and then shook my head. I was being silly. This was Alise, not an animal!
