LILY RUSHED HOME WITH a million conflicting ideas and worries in her head. Principle among them, now, was that the women police were being set up to fail. The first patrols on the streets of London, after the Great War, had started in 1919, born of a muddle of wartime women’s patrols and auxiliaries, but only a few years later they had fallen prey to the Geddes Axe, and were dismissed. Lady Astor had fought for them, and their own officers too, and they had been restored – reluctantly, and as long as they kept to their clearly defined roles. If the crime involved women or children, then women police were called in. Their days were spent dealing with runaways, abuse, and prostitutes – hardly the gentle, softer, more feminine sides of things, in spite of the fiction that was maintained. In many cases the male police were happy to be rid of such “welfare” cases, anyway.

But resistance to their presence remained at all levels of the force and it wasn’t beyond reason to suppose that Lily and Sylvia had been given an impossible task. You couldn’t effectively follow someone alone. You simply couldn’t.

That said, the force was overstretched, they were all expected to go above and beyond, and if it were simply a case of reporting information back to the station then being tailed by an otherwise useless policewoman was – in male eyes – a reasonable use of resources.

There had been something in Sylvia’s eyes however, some glimmer of doubt and suspicion, and Lily worried all the way home.
