Chapter 9
Darcy woke up after a long afternoon sleep â more restful than in a long time. The pain in his torso had started to diminish, and Dr Taylor had confirmed he had no fever and the danger of a bad cold had passed. He could feel his wounded ribs were slowly healing, but strangely, he was in no hurry to leave Netherfield.
Georgiana was adjusting well; she was bonding with the Bennet sisters nicely. Bingley looked happy to postpone his return to London for as long as necessary, and on a personal level, he was enjoying Mr Bennetâs company very much.
As his valet was giving him his medicine, an uproar of voices made him startle, and he turned abruptly. The sharp pain reminded him he was yet far from recovered, and he tried to find a better position, pulling himself up on his pillows.
With a curse escaping from his lips, he glanced at Dr Taylor, and both looked at the door where Bingley appeared in a distressed state.
âDarcy, there is someone whoââ
Pushing the master of the house away unceremoniously, a silhouette appeared, causing Darcy to gasp, barely concealing another curse.
âDarcy! Here you are!â
âAunt Catherine! What on earth⦠Why are you here? Has something happened?â
âOf course something has happened, Darcy. You have been trapped here for a while now, and I had to come and examine the situation with my own eyes.â
âSo, you came from Kent to examine the situation? After Georgiana specifically wrote to you that I was well attended and Dr Taylor is here with me? Where is Anne?â
âAnne is at Rosings â her delicate health does not allow her to travel, especially in this weather. But it is nice to see you worry about her, even if it is only a little.â
âIt is natural that I worry about her and about you. Will you tell me why you are here?â
Lady Catherine glared at Bingley with a silent but clear request for privacy, then at the servant and the doctor.
âLady Catherine â what a lovely surprise to see you,â Dr Taylor said, unimpressed by the ladyâs repressed displeasure.
âI imagine it is a surprise, Doctor. Do tell me when we can remove my nephew from this place and take him where his family may take proper care of him.â
âWe have already had this discussion, and it is impossible for him to travel for at least another fortnight.â
âA fortnight? This is unacceptable! My doctor assured meââ
âPlease leave me alone with my aunt for a few moments,â Darcy interrupted her, addressing the others in the room politely but determinedly. âAunt, please take a seat and let us discuss this calmly. I cannot reasonably imagine why you took the trouble of making this uncomfortable journey, but I have already made the proper decision in regard to my situation. I shall remain here for as long as necessary for a safe recovery. My friend, my sister, and my doctor are all here, taking good care of me. There is nothing more to say on this matter.
