Followed from London? Who the hell would do that, Eva wondered as she slipped out of the side room and edged her way around the club. The answer to that question came to her in less than a second. Duncan Webb, and through him Semion Razin’s people. Did they have the resources to follow her to the airport and then on to Berlin? When she looked back over the steps she had taken en-route, Eva realised it would have been ridiculously easy for Webb to arrange.

Nobody had followed her from London. Nobody had needed to. Webb’s people would have watched her board the plane and then contacted Razin’s people in Berlin, because Alastair Hadley had been certain Razin had equivalent organisations in most major European cities. Follow her, work out her approximate destination, and then put a price on her. It was easy if you had the phone numbers of enough people prepared to kill for a couple of thousand Euros. Maybe, she thought as she slinked around the side of a dance floor, they even had a WhatsApp group.

Where the hell was Crane? Why had he abandoned her with Tal and Gala? Where was she supposed to go now? Again, the answer came to her quickly. She needed to get out of the club as Tal had said, and then back to her hotel. Would she be safe there? It didn’t matter, she was thinking too far ahead. Crane had been aware of Ultras hanging around the club. Now she had to assume at least some of them were looking for her.

Would she be able to get out without being noticed, she wondered as she pushed the doors to the stairwell and started to make her way down to the ground floor. The doors swung closed behind her. It was at that point the question suddenly seemed academic.
