Life and Love

There is nothing better geared to raising hackles on the neck of every reasonable and right-thinking woman – not to mention the more extreme feminists – than that statement of St Paul that, ‘the husband is head of his wife’ and consequently ‘wives should submit to their husbands in everything’. It generates such passion and occasionally such hatred that the readers rarely go any further and consequently miss the point, that St Paul was not trying to make life more oppressive for women but that within the context of the lifestyle of those days he was trying to ensure that wives were given respect and dignity rather than being treated merely as their husband’s property.

No one will deny that throughout history there have been plenty of bad husbands – husbands who degraded their wives, beat them, insulted them, overworked them and rejected them – and throughout history there have been plenty of good husbands – husbands who loved their wives, treasured them, cared for them, delighted in them and stuck with them to the door of death. In our own day there are many good husbands – faithful, caring and thoughtful – but we have allowed ourselves to be conned by a tiny minority of influential communicators into believing that Christian marriage – and various other Christian beliefs – is on its way out; not really geared to life in the twenty-first century; an oppressive framework within which no one can hope to find personal satisfaction and fulfilment.

If you have any doubts about this then ask yourself, when is the last time you saw a film or television programme which showed marriage in a favourable light? How many of the juvenile characters in films and soap operas came from stable, traditional families of father, mother and children? How many happy families can you remember? How many caring and loving fathers and mothers?

The programme makers’ defence is:

We don’t shape the world. We merely reflect the situation we find. It’s not our fault if traditional marriage is on the slide with one out of every two marriages ending in divorce. It’s not our fault that murder, robbery, fraud, rape, incest, sexual abuse, and promiscuity are so prevalent. We didn’t create this world. We just reflect it.
