Itâs almost eight when the door swings open and Hank walks in, an older portly man following behind him.
I jump to my feet to intercept them.
âGive us twenty minutes, Mazur,â he says, as the other man keeps walking past him. âIâll bring her to you.â
Itâs actually forty-five, very long fucking minutes, but relief floods me when Hank walks toward me, a rough-looking Willa by his side.
I reach her in two strides and pull her into my arms, feeling her body sag against me. My eyes meet Hankâs over her head.
âLetâs walk outside,â he suggests.
I press a kiss to her head before dropping one arm, keeping the other firmly around her waist as we follow Hank to the parking lot. She leans heavily against my side, and I have a feeling sheâs at the end of her rope. She hasnât said a word yet.
âMy truck.â
Hank glances back, takes one look at Willa and changes direction to where my vehicle is parked. I unlock the doors and help Willa in the passenger seat, leaving the door open.
âWhat happened?â
âDA decided the officers jumped the gun on Willaâs arrest. Theyâre currently being instructed on proper police procedure, and on why this case is going to be handled by someone else. Heâs also looking into the validity of the charges against Brad Carey.â
âGood. Bradâs been in too long already. And for your information, Iâve never liked Bergland, heâs an asshole,â I share.
âThereâs something else you need to know. Willa mentioned she recognized someone last night.â
I turn to Willa, whose eyes are on me.
âBrantley Parker,â she says, the weight of the world in her voice. âHeâs the physician in charge of the veteransâ outpatient program at the VA hospital where I used to work.â
âDid he see you?â I ask immediately and she nods. âThatâs not good, sweetheart.â
âI know,â she whispers, staring down at her hands.
âWeâll fix it, though.â
âWonât bring Rupert back,â she says without looking up.
Fuck. She cared about the victim.
âOkay.â I turn to Hank. âIâm getting her home and then Iâll call the team. Weâll make sure sheâs covered at all times.â
âGlad to hear it. Iâm gonna head back in to see whatâs happening for Brad, but Iâll be in touch.â Then he turns to Willa. âIâll call you when I hear something, and donât hesitate to get in touch with me for anything. Get some rest.â
I close her door and round the hood, getting in behind the wheel. When I see she hasnât buckled in yet, I reach over and do it for her.
âThank you.â
âNo problem.â
âIâm tired.â
âI bet. Iâll get you home in no time.â
âHow badly does that hurt?â
I glance over at her and see sheâs taking in the state of my face.
âNot gonna lie, itâs sore. I got KOâd by the Bone Crusher.â
âOh no, should you be operating a vehicle?â
âIâm fine now. My team insisted I get checked out, so we stopped at the ER on the way home. Thatâs why Bree was at my place. She was making sure I didnât croak during the night,â I quickly add, in case she got the wrong idea.
