Seaver pulled a holding pin on his battle rifle and popped the weapon open at the magazine well. The inner magnetic acceleration bolt popped out and Seaver snatched it out of the air and set it onto a small cloth. Peering down the barrel, Seaver ran a fingertip across the electrical tabs.

He squeezed one hand and the light-green sheen to his skin deepened. He turned his hand over and traced the thin surgical scars up and down his arm with his eyes.

“Voidsman?” came a voice from the door to the empty barracks. His platoon leader was there. A man barely older than him, he already had a tour as an armsman to his name, which made him well qualified to lead the hodgepodge of men and women assigned to the Albion 1st Provisional Infantry.

“Sir?” Seaver jumped to his feet.

“Got some gentlemen here that wish to speak with you.” The lieutenant stood aside and a pair of Genevans in blue and earth-toned suits came in.

“Colonel Steiner,” said the one in blue. “That’s Lieutenant Colonel Fegeline. We understand you have a great deal of experience fighting the enemy. We would rather not learn how to kill Daegon on Albion.”

“What can you tell us?” Fegeline asked.

“Wow…are you guys, like, Reich or something?” Seaver asked.

Fegeline took a step toward Seaver. Steiner put an arm out and stopped the other Genevan.

“We are augmentees to Albion,” Steiner said. “We are here to fight Daegon. What was done to you, son? Thorvald speaks highly of your abilities.”

“The Daegon captured me. Forced me to fight for them and when I showed some ability, they…changed me. Made me addicted to some sort of drug gene-coded to my master. I’d have already died of withdrawals if we hadn’t got a blood sample and if the doctors aboard hadn’t fabricated an antidote. Now I’m free of them and all I want to do is kill them,” Seaver said.

“I will forgive his assumption,” Fegeline said. “He’s got spirit.”

“Tell us what we need to know to kill them,” Steiner said.

Seaver reassembled his rifle without looking at it.

“You need anti-tank munitions to take down the golems,” Seaver said, nodding. “They’ve got excellent IR sensors and if you want effective cover, you need at least a foot of thick material between you and them or they’ll spot you and their heavy machine guns will chew through any cover that’s not enough to hide you from their sensors. The golems they…they like prisoners. They’ll tear us apart just to hear the screams.”

“Weak points?” Fegeline asked.

“You kill the Daegon controlling them. If they don’t have constant directions, they’ll sort of wander off until they see something that fits a target profile. Also, the mags on their backs aren’t armored well. Couple good shots will cook ’em off and the golems won’t be able to do much after that. It’s the walkers you really have to worry about.” Seaver closed his eyes and a slight shiver went through his body.

“Tell us everything,” Steiner said.
