Seaver pulled a holding pin on his battle rifle and popped the weapon open at the magazine well. The inner magnetic acceleration bolt popped out and Seaver snatched it out of the air and set it onto a small cloth. Peering down the barrel, Seaver ran a fingertip across the electrical tabs.
He squeezed one hand and the light-green sheen to his skin deepened. He turned his hand over and traced the thin surgical scars up and down his arm with his eyes.
âVoidsman?â came a voice from the door to the empty barracks. His platoon leader was there. A man barely older than him, he already had a tour as an armsman to his name, which made him well qualified to lead the hodgepodge of men and women assigned to the Albion 1st Provisional Infantry.
âSir?â Seaver jumped to his feet.
âGot some gentlemen here that wish to speak with you.â The lieutenant stood aside and a pair of Genevans in blue and earth-toned suits came in.
âColonel Steiner,â said the one in blue. âThatâs Lieutenant Colonel Fegeline. We understand you have a great deal of experience fighting the enemy. We would rather not learn how to kill Daegon on Albion.â
âWhat can you tell us?â Fegeline asked.
âWowâ¦are you guys, like, Reich or something?â Seaver asked.
Fegeline took a step toward Seaver. Steiner put an arm out and stopped the other Genevan.
âWe are augmentees to Albion,â Steiner said. âWe are here to fight Daegon. What was done to you, son? Thorvald speaks highly of your abilities.â
âThe Daegon captured me. Forced me to fight for them and when I showed some ability, theyâ¦changed me. Made me addicted to some sort of drug gene-coded to my master. Iâd have already died of withdrawals if we hadnât got a blood sample and if the doctors aboard hadnât fabricated an antidote. Now Iâm free of them and all I want to do is kill them,â Seaver said.
âI will forgive his assumption,â Fegeline said. âHeâs got spirit.â
âTell us what we need to know to kill them,â Steiner said.
Seaver reassembled his rifle without looking at it.
âYou need anti-tank munitions to take down the golems,â Seaver said, nodding. âTheyâve got excellent IR sensors and if you want effective cover, you need at least a foot of thick material between you and them or theyâll spot you and their heavy machine guns will chew through any cover thatâs not enough to hide you from their sensors. The golems theyâ¦they like prisoners. Theyâll tear us apart just to hear the screams.â
âWeak points?â Fegeline asked.
âYou kill the Daegon controlling them. If they donât have constant directions, theyâll sort of wander off until they see something that fits a target profile. Also, the mags on their backs arenât armored well. Couple good shots will cook âem off and the golems wonât be able to do much after that. Itâs the walkers you really have to worry about.â Seaver closed his eyes and a slight shiver went through his body.
âTell us everything,â Steiner said.
