Physical Manifestations

One obvious way to discern the presence of a demon is when it manifests in a person’s body. Not all manifestations are demonic. It could be the person or his flesh reacting to the manifest presence of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, when you see a manifestation of some sort, even though it doesn’t always mean there is a demonic spirit, it is enough to check it out. Remember that when a demon manifests, it isn’t a first choice. They prefer to live in darkness in stealth mode, not out in the open. Manifestations are often the demon’s tactic to get you to quit. It should be an encouragement to you because often it is a sign their time is up with that person.

Manifestations are sometimes the demon’s way to humiliate someone. If a person starts tearing off his clothes, doing body movements that are vulgar, or similar acts, the spirit wants to shame him. Your job is to protect the person’s dignity. You have authority to rebuke the manifestation, take authority, and stop that manifestation.

Following are some common manifestations. This certainly isn’t an exhaustive list because there can be more dramatic manifestations depending on how deeply the person was embedded in the demonic realm.

If pain moves around in the body, that is a spirit of infirmity. If you are praying for a person’s shoulder and the pain moves from the shoulder to the leg, that is certainly a spirit. Spirits of infirmity may be tied to an open door that needs to be closed but often they are loosely attached and go quickly.

If a person goes into a sudden drowsiness or even a drunken stupor as if he just took a lot of valium, that is very suspicious. Those demons intend to put him to sleep to prevent his cooperating in the deliverance.

Facial contortions stretch the face in abnormal ways. It’s not always a sure sign of a demon as the flesh can also react with grimaces and other intense expressions, but when I see it I’m suspicious.

Screaming was a common demonic reaction to Jesus (Mark 1:26; Luke 4:33). You may also hear screaming if a wound of the heart comes to the surface and the person reacts to the pain. That may not be demonic at all. However, if there is screaming, you need to check out the source.

I am really suspicious if a person’s body becomes rigid or frozen. That could be angels restraining him to stop the spirits from doing something through his body. I was in the “deliverance tent” at a crusade in Brazil one time. The deliverance tent is where they took the people who manifested so violently that the ministry team needed more help. I was brought to a man who was involved in Macumba, a common form of Brazilian witchcraft. He was a brand-new believer who needed to get cleaned up. They sat him down in a chair and when my team came to get him, he growled at us. Growling is a good sign you are dealing with a demon.
