Lauren looked over Bonnie’s left shoulder at the tall green and white sign for Miami Homestead General Aviation. Bonnie slowed, activated the left-hand turn indicator and hugged the painted yellow road lines opposite the airport entrance. The grass along the front was flooded with standing water. Bonnie stopped and waited for a break in traffic.

The airport looked different today. Lauren didn’t remember the giant F.B.O. letters crudely painted in blood red on the side of the ugly white two-story building. She hadn’t noticed the row of juvenile queen palm trees planted out front, supported by wooden stakes and pink plastic ties. Maybe because yesterday, she was wearing her vacation goggles.

While Bonnie waited for a break in traffic, a flatbed semi-tractor trailer approached from the opposite direction. It swung wide to make a right-hand turn into the airport entrance, so wide it almost skimmed Bonnie’s front bumper.

“Fucker,” Bonnie said, immediately apologizing for the slip of the tongue.

An orange helicopter was anchored to the flatbed with straps and chains. Although it was three-quarters covered with a heavy canvas tarp, it was obviously a Coast Guard asset.

Bonnie turned left and stopped the SUV behind the semi blocking the driveway. A yellow taco truck was parked on the inside of the chain link fence parallel to the shoulder of the road. A Hispanic woman with two small children sat on a picnic bench under the open-air palapa facing the street.

“Where do you want me to drop you?” Bonnie asked.

Lauren leaned against the passenger’s side door and pressed her cheek close to the window. “I parked up ahead on the right. I think there’s enough room for you to go around.”

Bonnie backed up and approached the narrow gap between the tractor trailer and the parked cars.

“Mine’s the black Audi next to that red pickup.”

Bonnie eyes flicked left and right watching the side mirrors as she squeezed her vehicle between the tractor-trailer and the parked cars.

Lauren checked her phone again. God, she hated it when Vance ignored her.

Bonnie stopped adjacent to the tailgate of the red pickup and popped the hatchback from the cockpit. “In order to leave enough room for you to get out on your side, I don’t have enough on my side to open my door and help you with your bag.”

“I got it from here,” Lauren said, opening the car door, careful not to hit the bumper of the pickup. She walked around the back of the SUV and grabbed her bag.

Bonnie turned around behind the wheel and yelled from the driver’s seat. “Do you mind closing the hatch?”

“Sure,” Lauren set her roller bag down behind the bumper of the red pickup. She stuck her head inside the back of Bonnie’s car. “Five stars and a twenty percent tip,” she said, then reached up and pulled the hatchback shut.

Bonnie then backed up and rolled down the passenger window. “Be safe.”

“You too,” Lauren said, riffling through her purse for her car key. She noticed the back taillight of the Audi was broken out. Pieces of red and clear plastic lay on the ground near the rear tire on the driver’s side.
