Hijo de puta ! I’ll kill you,” he screamed as he replaced the empty magazine with a new one, and leaped down the remaining few steps, spraying bullets into the corridor. I didn’t need the dead man as a shield as the bullets flew too high, waist high and up, the spent cases raining down all around me. I realized I couldn’t take the man alive. I didn’t care either way. I fired four quick shots, two aimed at the middle of his body and two at his head.

Juan Alvarez was a dead man before he hit the ground.

But I had no time to take a breather. I heard Adriel fire three shots in succession. They were followed by bursts of automatic fire.

“Ranch house is clear,” I spoke into the mic, finally breaking radio silence.

“Roger that,” Adriel replied. “I’ve shot out the front tires of the SUV, taken out two men. Two more to go. I’m holding back, trying not to kill them all.”

“Roger that. We’ll try to take one alive. I’m coming out. Cover me,” I replied, grabbed the Colt slung across my back, and walked out.

The SUV stood forty yards from the ranch house, its front tires blown. The two men were taking cover behind it. I let out a blast of automatic fire, spraying bullets all across the vehicle. It was more of a scare tactic. The bullets made thudding noises as they drilled holes into the front body of the SUV. The 32-round magazine got emptied in a little over two seconds.

I was walking towards the SUV sticking to Adriel’s line of sight, so the men couldn’t fire back without risking getting shot by Adriel. In the two seconds it took me to replace the magazine, one man tried lining his gun on me. It was his last mistake. A bullet from Adriel took him out. I had the fresh magazine in place by then.

“Last chance,” I shouted. “Come out now and you can still remain alive. You’ve got five seconds to decide.”

A man stepped out from behind the SUV three seconds later, hands held high above him. Thin, wiry guy. Tattoos all over his neck, although none of a rattlesnake—the trademark of the SDC cartel. I figured he was a hired man—a freelance killer. He would be easier to get talking. I moved forward, keeping him covered.

“Down on the ground. Now,” I ordered.

The man complied immediately. I kicked his legs apart, frisked him, found a Glock in the back of his pants, and a machete in a sheath tied to his belt.

“Dangerous guy, huh? You like cutting people?”

The man remained silent. Kept looking at the ground inches from his face. I grabbed the baton from my side and hit him hard on the side of his head. Put him to sleep. I took out flex cuffs from my pocket and tied his hands behind him.

“All clear,” I spoke into the radio.

“Roger that,” Adriel replied.

“Chucky, seen anything else other than the two vehicles?”

“That’s a negative.”

“Good job, Chucky.
