After work, I’m at the vet’s office, filling out paperwork for the dog I effectively just adopted, when my phone beeps in my pocket.

“Sorry,” I tell the receptionist that’s waiting on me to finish up the paperwork so that the place can close for the day. I glance at my phone and feel my heart ratchet up in my chest.

What does one wear when presenting a medical device to a board of cooperate executives?

It’s an innocent question. Of course, it is. But I immediately picture her in that dress that she wore to the auction the other night. I remember the way the hem slid over my fingers. And then I picture her wearing absolutely nothing. I shake my head and focus on the forms. Gotta finish filling out the forms.

Name. It never occurred to me that I would have to name the dog. Until this moment, I haven’t really been thinking clearly where the dog is concerned. I brought him to this vet this morning, and when they asked me if I was the owner, I said yes, because what else was I going to do? I didn’t want to risk the chances that the dog has a chip that might lead the vet back to his horrible previous owners. So, yes, I’m the owner, and it’s only now really kicking in what that means.

Joey, I write. Owen once spent some time in Australia and came back with the knowledge that a baby kangaroo is called a Joey. If all he managed was a sprain after being tossed from that SUV, then maybe he’s at least part kangaroo.
